ABOUT THE CONCEPT
I kept thinking of this phrase -- "Frankenstein, The Brand Name." As if it was so ubiquitous and "out there" in the cultural zeitgeist that it was almost a brand unto itself. Certainly, the monster is iconic in a way that few things are.
I asked myself if I could find a way to illustrate Frankenstein and his creature (and other story concepts) strictly using the visual language of 20th century branding and advertising, literally bringing the phrase "Frankenstein, The Brand Name" to life in some way.
The analog for the creature is a character used in Western Electric Advertising in the mid-century period. I thought he was a perfect analog for the creature -- something animated by a galvanizing charge. Other elements are illustrated in a late WPA style and all of the other elements are from the world of electrical advertising and safety. It adds up to something compelling and uniquely unsettling.
